How is Spiritual Direction different than therapy?
Someone created a wonderful chart that compares spiritual direction, pastoral care, pastoral counseling, and therapy. I like to think of it like this -- therapy helps us find a healthy emotional and mental balance. Spiritual direction helps us (re)connect to the holy and transcendent. In spiritual direction I help people discern their purpose, core values, and life alignment around those. Sometimes people come to me for help finding spiritual practices that resonate with their beliefs and nature.
What should I expect?
The first session is getting to know one another. I'll ask questions about your spiritual life journey and your goals for our time together. Usually we start sessions with the lighting of a candle and some silence. I will bring a poem, scripture or reflection based on previous sessions. And then we see where the Spirit takes us.
What are your fees?
The base fee is $150 per session. Â Out of my commitment to collegiality and an acknowledgement that our compensations can be wildly imbalanced (and capitalism sucks), a sliding scale is available for a limited number of people.
